How can you NOT be captivated by the opening: "Sometimes art can change how people see the world. But Anna Coleman Ladd made art that changed how the world saw people"? As a person who is naturally inquisitive, has a passion for art, and loves to learn I was drawn to the NPR Story One Sculptor's Answer to WWI Wounds: Plaster, Copper and Paint. Our face non-verbally communicates to others. Consider IDEAL vs REAL. Consider how the artist's representation is a product of the person that is PAYING the bill for the work. In an era where artists work and HOPE to sell their work, we see more real than ideal. Modern artists, post-Industrial Revolution artists, felt more comfortable expressing what they saw without retributions.
I don't know about you, but I prefer to see what is real so that I can make a judgment based on facts not distortions.
