In a story relating to music from the Holocaust. The quote applies to this class...to all humanity:

"What you really want as a person and as an artist — even when you are gone — is that your dreams, your essence, your purpose, your meaning does live on. A lot of these people, their lives were taken but we have this part of them,"

Feeling BLUE?
GREEN with envy?

Those popular expressions can be heard numerous times throughout the day. Colors have expressive powers that can cause one to feel happy, sad, agitated or relaxed.

Read the article linked here to discover Color Theory. Artists use the psychology behind colors when portraying their subject. BE AWARE of this concept!

Review ....

Site Specific Sculptures

These sculptures are usually large in scale and located outside. The Stuart Collection at UCSD encompasses several site specific sculptures. The bear in this image is located near the School of Engineering buildings.

Claes Oldenberg creates large scale "Pop Art" sculptures for public places. Many office buildings and parks contain his works.

Read this article about Barbara Krueger and UCSD: http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/news/arts/la-et-kruger23-2008jun23,0,4240457.story

BONUS: Generally, what is the relationship between the site and the sculpture? To answer this you may want to read up on the Stuart Collection and Claes Oldenberg sites. Who is the patron of most site specific sculptures?

EXTRA BONUS: By June 1st...
Go to the UCSD Campus and tour the Stuart Collection sculptures. Have a picture of you taken at at least 5 of the sculptures. Print out the pictures and submit them. Write a 2 page paper (double spaced) about the relationship between the site and the sculpture. Address WHY a college campus was chosen to house this collection of sculptures.

AP TEST updated information from the email I was sent

http://apcentral.collegeboard.com/apc/members/exam/exam_questions/2053.html

See pdf as attachment under key documents

The test will start with the 30 minute essays
The TIMED slide based questions will NOW be color copies. Students will have to manage time in this section (1 hour). This USED to be a timed section with each slide shown a limited amount of time. Now it is the students' responsibility to manage time in this section. The questions must be completed in the allotted time period with students being able to go back and forth between questions.

How does this affect us? Instead of practicing the timed sections like we did this morning, we'll practice timing with printed images and an allotment of time to complete them then discuss/grade. What is GREAT is that no one will have a "bad" seat on test day!!!

Looking Ahead...Looking Back

As we are looking at the rise of MODERNISM...and discussing Romanticism we need to look at how artists reflected "OTHER" in their artwork. A KEY artwork in the History of Art is Picasso's 1907 work Les Demoiselles d' Avignon. This work is continually studied by historians.

It is arranged in VERTICAL format, and large scale, normally a format reserved for ICONIC works. Is it iconic? The women are not shown ideal?

Why are some women masked? Why are the bodies distorted? Is Picasso making a statement about the morality of visiting a brothel? Is he making a political statement about French Colonization in Africa?

Who is the intended audience?

Does it matter to you in your viewing of the work that preliminary work on the painting included a medical student (with a skull) and a sailor?

Look at the image and the interactive exhibit at the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) in NYC. The audio and interactive MULTIMEDIA links at the bottom of the page are good places to continue our study of Picasso's groundbreaking painting.
