Upcoming work

Finished at the DMV...was not as bad as I expected...an hour is good considering I did not have an appointment!
Chapter 23 WKBK is due tomorrow

This weekend check turnitin.com to make sure you do not need to "add" to your response.

BRING IN A COLOR COPY OF A LANDSCAPE OR STILL LIFE ARTWORK BY MONDAY...for use in class Tuesday (another videotape day)

TEST/MC due Monday 3-2-09

What to do to study:
read notes/wkbk assignments
focus on works/artists/architects/sculptors we looked at in class
go to the book companion website (link on blog) and do the online Multiple Choice Quiz for each chapter

Test format:
Multiple choice/Short answer/essay (slide based and not slide based)

Your exam will have three or four essay questions. You will have to answer 1 or 2 of the choices. The list of POTENTIAL essay/short answer topics are as follows:

1. Compare the treatment of the architecture and landscape in the work by the Limbourg Brothers with that of Ambrogio Lorenzetti's Effects of Good Government. In what ways are they similar? In what ways do they differ?

2. Jan van Eyck revived and secularized portraiture. How does Jan van Eyck's approach to portraiture as shown in his self-portrait differ from the approach of Italian portraitists, for example Botticelli's Portrait of a Youth.

3. Compare Rogier van der Weyden's Deposition to Giotto's. Which moves you most AND why?

4. Discuss the Portinari Alterpiece by Hugo van der Goes; note especially the iconography and the meaning of disguised symbols (HINT: memory device...consider the nut). What stylistic influence do you see from Jan van Eyck? How does this altarpiece differ from Jan van Eyck's Ghent Altarpiece?

5. (This involves remembering Rome...if you came to the AP review session that is what we discussed this week). How does Donatello's Gattamelata differ from the equestrian portrait of the emperor Marcus Aurelius (ch 10) and the medieval Bamberg Rider (ch 18). What was the purpose for the high pedestal used with the Gattemelata.

6. Giotto is considered the father of western art. Explain why he was given this title. Use at least two artworks in your description and discuss his style/innovations.

7. Explain the principles of linear perspective that the Renaissance Artists used. Use as your example either Donatello's Feast of Herrod or Masaccio's Holy Trinity. Why was perspective important to Renaissance artists?

8. How does the statement by Ghiberti, "I strove to imitate nature as closely as I could...", reflect the development of art in 15th Century Italy?Use examples to support your response.

9. Discuss Alberti's importance on the fields of art and architecture. Cite at least two examples in your analysis.

10. Evaluate Donatello's contribution to sculpture in the 15th Century. Cite at least two examples in your response.
