By tomorrow morning (No Later Than 10 AM) the Museum Catalog for 33/34 and Architecture will be posted.
Review Idea for today (deals with CONTEMPORARY ART): DUE...Tuesday 5-4-10
Often artists are influenced by popular imagery of the masses instead of "high-brow" art known and appreciated by a select few. Select and fully identify 4 20th century works that utilize "low-brow" subject matter (THINK ...WARHOL as an example). Discuss HOW and WHY these artists used imagery from popular culture rather than "fine art".
ALSO...look for an additional TURNITIN.COM discussion DUE SUNDAY 5-2-10
Welcome to AP ART HISTORY! The Blog will be our method of communication. Weekly I'll post assignments and add links to readings and worksheets (to go green and save paper). It is your responsibility to check the blog on a daily basis (HINT: Bookmark the page) as I will from time to time post announcements and bonus opportunities. If you have questions about the blog please e-mail me at rmacvay@sahs.org and cc me at renemacvay@yahoo.com.

AP TEST updated information from the email I was sent
http://apcentral.collegeboard.com/apc/members/exam/exam_questions/2053.html
See pdf as attachment under key documents
The test will start with the 30 minute essays
The TIMED slide based questions will NOW be color copies. Students will have to manage time in this section (1 hour). This USED to be a timed section with each slide shown a limited amount of time. Now it is the students' responsibility to manage time in this section. The questions must be completed in the allotted time period with students being able to go back and forth between questions.
How does this affect us? Instead of practicing the timed sections like we did this morning, we'll practice timing with printed images and an allotment of time to complete them then discuss/grade. What is GREAT is that no one will have a "bad" seat on test day!!!

Looking Ahead...Looking Back

As we are looking at the rise of MODERNISM...and discussing Romanticism we need to look at how artists reflected "OTHER" in their artwork. A KEY artwork in the History of Art is Picasso's 1907 work Les Demoiselles d' Avignon. This work is continually studied by historians.
It is arranged in VERTICAL format, and large scale, normally a format reserved for ICONIC works. Is it iconic? The women are not shown ideal?
Why are some women masked? Why are the bodies distorted? Is Picasso making a statement about the morality of visiting a brothel? Is he making a political statement about French Colonization in Africa?
Who is the intended audience?
Does it matter to you in your viewing of the work that preliminary work on the painting included a medical student (with a skull) and a sailor?
Look at the image and the interactive exhibit at the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) in NYC. The audio and interactive MULTIMEDIA links at the bottom of the page are good places to continue our study of Picasso's groundbreaking painting.

Next Concept to review: Buddhism

What are the attributes of a Buddha? Can you label the Usnisha? Urna?
Buddha and Jesus are two examples of HOLY MEN/RELIGIOUS FIGURES from both BEYOND the Western Tradition and the Western Tradition. Find images that show each teaching, praying, taking time for introspection (going away and fasting). How are each shown as Holy compared to others in a scene?
Read the current Smithsonian Magazine article titled Glimpses of a Lost World to read about art in a Buddhist Monastery in the Himalayas.

Concepts to Review: African Art

Check out the exhibit at the Detroit Institute of Arts: through African Eyes. Read the Museum's introduction to the exhibit...
One of the concepts the exhibit brings about is how one culture represents a culture deemed as "other".
Pick out Three images from your text that show how Africans portrayed a culture deemed as "OTHER" to them. Explain how they portrayed this OTHER ... wishful longing, criticism, praise, hatred, etc.
Pick out THREE images of WESTERN CULTURES portraying Africans as OTHERS. How are they portraying the OTHER...fascination, disgust, etc.
The DIA has an EXTENSIVE collection of African Art you should peruse to remind yourself of what we looked at first semester.
Remember...these review items are suggestions...they will be class discussions...some topics you may need to refresh yourself on more than others.
